Can Your PC Run Complementary?

Complementary requirements depend on your quality profile more than a single GPU name. Medium on a modern discrete GPU feels fine for many players. Ultra asks for stronger hardware and cooler laptops.

A weak laptop can run Potato. Ultra wants more GPU and patience with heat. Check this list before you download Unbound or Reimagined.

Baseline requirements

You need Minecraft Java Edition, a shader loader (Iris recommended, OptiFine optional), and a GPU that supports modern OpenGL shader packs.

Allocate enough RAM to Minecraft for your mod count, but do not starve the GPU driver by assigning extreme heap sizes.

Area Practical target
Edition Minecraft Java Edition
Loader Iris on Fabric or Quilt, or OptiFine
Storage Room for game, mods, and shader ZIPs
Potato or Low Integrated or older discrete GPUs
Medium Mainstream gaming GPUs
High or Ultra Strong discrete GPUs with headroom

Soft limits that surprise people

Render distance multiplies shader cost. A Medium profile at extreme distance can feel worse than High at a modest distance.

Hot laptops throttle. If FPS collapses after ten minutes, check temperature before you blame Complementary Shaders.

Practical baseline for Complementary

Aim for a dedicated GPU when you want Medium or higher outdoors with shadows. Integrated graphics can work on Potato with Iris and Sodium, start from Fabric and Sodium then Potato settings.

RAM matters for Java and chunks, but GPU and driver age often decide whether Complementary compiles cleanly. Keep drivers updated before you chase obscure toggles.

Test fairly before you upgrade hardware

Measure FPS in your real world, not the title screen. Compare Medium vs Potato on the same route. Use the FPS boost guide before buying parts.

Common questions

Often on Potato or Low with lower render distance. Expect compromises.
Follow your modpack guidance. Shaders stress the GPU more than RAM, yet tiny heaps still stutter while loading chunks.
No. Edition matters more than hardware. See Complementary on Bedrock.
