What Complementary Shaders are

Complementary Shaders are a Minecraft Java Edition shader family with two primary styles: Complementary Unbound and Complementary Reimagined. The current stable line covered here is r5.9.3. You download the ZIP, place it in shaderpacks, then enable it with Iris (preferred) or OptiFine.

Complementary Unbound keeps a natural Minecraft mood with richer light, shadows, and atmosphere. Complementary Reimagined uses a more stylized color grade for builds and showcases. Both share the same Complementary settings system, so Potato through Ultra profiles stay familiar.

Complementary Shaders run on Java Edition only. Bedrock players should read the Bedrock page before downloading a Java ZIP.

Why players choose Complementary Shaders

You get flexible quality presets, two distinct art directions, and broad Java version support without giving up readability in survival or building.

Unbound and Reimagined

Pick a realistic default or a stylized grade without learning a new options menu from scratch.

Iris ready

Works well with Iris on Fabric or Quilt beside Sodium for smoother modern Java play.

Scalable presets

Potato, Low, Medium, High, Ultra, and custom profiles let you trade beauty for FPS on purpose.

Clear water and weather

Reflections, volumetric fog, and clouds change biome mood while keeping terrain readable.

Euphoria Patches friendly

Optional patches add more toggles when you want deeper control after the base pack.

Version continuity

Stay on r5.9.3 for new worlds, or use the archive when a modpack pins an older build.

Complementary Shaders screenshots

Preview Unbound dusk light, Reimagined villages, cave glow, and water reflections before you install.

Install Complementary Shaders

Install Iris with Fabric or Quilt, then drop the Unbound or Reimagined ZIP into shaderpacks. OptiFine still works for many setups. Full steps are on the install guide.

Grab r5.9.3 from the download hub, or go straight to Unbound or Reimagined. Keep the ZIP intact, enable it in Video Settings, then start on Medium or Potato if your GPU is modest.

  1. Install Fabric or Quilt and add Iris (Sodium recommended).
  2. Download Complementary Unbound or Reimagined as a ZIP.
  3. Move the ZIP into .minecraft/shaderpacks.
  4. Launch Minecraft, open Video Settings, open Shaders, and select the pack.
  5. Pick a quality profile, then tweak shadows and volumetric fog if FPS dips.
